Getting Started

Piazza is a web forum where instructors and students can discuss course content easily, with its ability to display LaTeX is especially beneficial for mathematics and engineering. The threaded layout of discussions facilitates back and forth discussion. Additionally, students can post questions anonymously, creating a friendly environment that encourages class participation. At UBC, Piazza is integrated with Canvas.

Piazza is a web application that can be integrated with Canvas. To comply with BC privacy legislation, students will need to create a Piazza account and agree to the terms of use the first time they use the tool. You can make Piazza accessible through the side navigation bar in Canvas, or you can link directly to it in a module.

Add Piazza to the side bar:

  • Log in to your Canvas course.
  • Go to Settings.
  • Select the Navigation tab
  • Scroll down until you find Piazza.
  • Click the gear, and select Enable.
  • Click Save.

Add Piazza to a module:

  • Log in to your Canvas course.
  • Go to Modules.
  • Click the Add item button on a module.
  • Select External Tool from the drop-down menu.
  • Select Piazza and then add item.

Once you've created a link to Piazza, ask your students to log in or create an account. They can do so by following these steps:

  • Access Piazza through the link that you have created.
  • Enter their email address and set a password or—if they already have a Piazza account—enter the name and email address for that account.
  • If an account already exists, Piazza will confirm that and ask for the password to your existing Piazza account.
  • Click Continue to launch Piazza.

For more information about using the tool after setup, please reference Piazza's help topics or read about some real-life teaching examples.

  • If you are in the Faculty of Applied Science, you should first contact the Centre for Instructional Support with your Piazza requests. You can contact us at learning@apsc.ubc.ca or drop into our office (CEME 1214) during normal business hours. Submitting requests to the email will automatically generate a help ticket in our system and helpful Learning Tech Rover will follow-up with you.
  • Outside of normal business hours and for more difficult issues you can contact the central campus Learning Technology Hub [lt.hub@ubc.ca or 604-827-4775]
  • To learn more about how to use Piazza on your own, you can check out the Piazza documentation.
